Truck Transmissions

Most automobile owners never give a thought to the amazingly complex mechanisms and devices fitted into their vehicles. As far as they are concerned, turning a key here and pressing a pedal there is all it takes to keep their vehicle running. That is not the case. As far as trucks are concerned, the complexities involved in keeping them running is even more. Trucks are designed to carry heavy loads across long distances. A truck may run more miles in a week than an average car owner may drive in a month. Hence, the body of the truck, its engine and its components are significantly bigger. They are designed to carry huge loads over long distances in the most trying conditions. Hence, do not make the mistake of treating your truck transmission as just another automobile component. Truck transmissions are very different as compared to transmissions used in passenger cars. It would be incorrect to say that size is the only significant distinction between ford car transmissions and ford truck transmissions.

Double clutching continued to be popular despite the invention of synchronized transmissions in 1920's. All truck drivers had to press the clutch once to release the gear and press it again after increasing the engine rpm to the right point where the spinning gears would intermesh with each other without any grinding or other such mishaps.

Car manufacturer saw no reason to go beyond the five- speed limit in transmissions. However, trucks soon moved from three gears to seven and even ten speed transmissions. Today, it is common to find trucks running on the road with a 7 speed truck transmission fitted by the manufacturers. Developments in technology and the use of stronger and durable materials in truck transmissions has led to manufacture of even super 10 truck transmission. This transmission is partly automatic and partly manual. This makes it easier for the truck driver to extract maximum performance from the engine without any physical exertion.

The latest trend in transmission manufacture is the use of electronics instead of mechanics. Sensors and electronic chips are being used to ensure the gears connect with each other smoothly. Pretty soon, transmissions for heavy vehicles like trucks shall be completely computerized to ensure near perfect performance.Find good quality new as well as used transmissions for your trucks at Autommotix.
